Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that Encarta (2001) describes as an illness that results in delusional thought patterns, hallucinations, and inappropriate effect. It literally means â€Å"split-mind’, but is not a multiple personality disorder. According to DSM-IV (1996) schizophrenia is categorized under the diagnostic code, ICD-9-CM or International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification of 295.xx. Symptoms of schizophrenia can be positive, which occur during the active phase, and negative, which are present before the onset of the disorder. Positive symptoms of the disease include delusions of grandeur (a belief that one is a famous admired individual), delusion of control (when they believe something wants to control them), delusions of broadcasting (belief that another can read their minds or their thoughts are being aired on the radio), delusions of persecution, and thought withdrawal (belief that their thoughts have been removed from thei r brain). Negative symptoms include anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure), alogia (disorganized speech), and flat affect (when the individual does not show any emotion even in situations that strong reactions are expected). According to the DSM-IV (1996) one must fall under these explicit categories in order to be diagnosed with schizophrenia: A.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Characteristic Symptoms: Two (or more) of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a one-month period (or less if successfully treated): 1.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Delusions 2.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Hallucinations 3.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Disorganized speech (e.g.. Frequent derailment or incoherence) 4.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior 5.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Negative symptoms, i.e., affective flattening, alogia, or avolition Note: Only one Criterion A symptom is required if delusions are bizarre or hallucinations consist of a voice keeping up a running commentary on the person’s behavior or thoughts, or two or more voices conversing with each other. It helps the family members learn to see â€Å"early warning signs† of probable relapse as well as different methods of problem solving. Self-help groups are for both the schizophrenic individual as well as their families. These groups are not led by professionals, but rather are groups of schizophrenics and their families leaning on each other for psychological support. In the novel, the main character is named Guy Montage; He is a firefighter in a dyspepsia, except the firefighters fight not against fires yet are in an ongoing war against literature. His wife is named Mildred Montage she is somewhat of robot, all she ever does is stay at home and talk to her â€Å"family† which is just programs on the television. Mildred is unaware that she is depressed because she has no flavor to her life, she thinks in her mind she is refectory content with her seashell headphones and her parlor walls.Could a person be happy staying inside all day with just a television? Maybe if you figured the televisions were your family yet how could you get someone to believe that there family is nothing more than binary code. In today's day and age we rely on that intrinsic reflex of automatically checking our phone after that subtle ring. If that's all that our mind is worried about maybe we are heading to a sociopath society. In the novel Mildred attempted to comm it suicide, yet was caught just in the nick of time by Montage.When the ambulance rolled up a few engineers and large contraption and basically pumped her stomach and she was good as new. The government is sending out engineers instead of medical professionals because people are overdosing every day. Just like Mildred everyone is brainwashed into thinking they are content with how they live every day, just sitting in front of the parlor walls or listening to the â€Å"news.

For this assignment, I chose to watch the movie â€Å"Up.† As a young boy, Carl Fredriskon, idolized an explorer by the name of Charles Muntz. Carl has a dream of traveling to South America and exploring the forbidden Paradise Falls, just as Charles did. One day, as Carl is making his way down the street, he hears a young female voice screaming his favorite line â€Å"adventure is out there!† Out of curiosity, Carl makes his way into what seems to be a clubhouse belonging to a young girl, Ellie, and he befriends her. She shares with Carl that she also has a desire to relocate her clubhouse to Paradise Falls. Carl and Ellie get married and fix up the old abandoned house, which Ellie had turned into her clubhouse. Carl sells balloons out of a cart for a living with Ellie. As their marriage continues and they try to have children, Carl and Ellie realize that children is not something that they will be able to experience. After finding out this news, the couple decides to b egin saving up change and placing it into their jar to save for their trip to Paradise Falls. As the days go by, Carl and Ellie are faced with hardships and home damages, car troubles, and medical bills squeeze the money out of their adventure jar savings. At last, Carl is able to buy tickets to South America so that they are able to fulfill their lifelong dreams and explore Paradise Falls. One day, before they are able to carry out their adventure, Ellie becomes ill and passes away.
